Time has gone by so quick in 2009… it’s already Christmas Eve in Hong Kong. No biggie I guess… I like the fact that time has been flying in some ways. I’m pretty far behind my usual reading, my Instapaper is pretty packed with what I assume is some good shit to share over the next few days. This latest Link Dump started off real short and then I had a few family dinners where I must concede I was rather bored so I whipped out the phone… never not working… per-say haha. Eh… if you look a lot of these links, they’re mostly revolving around the NY Times, not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I personally find the NY Times to be a great media source with articles that interest me.
My friend Jasper mentioned that there’s a lot of reading to consume, but I don’t think I’d have it any other way. The shit I leave here isn’t to be rapidly consumed, it’s more along the lines to check it out and learn something, not really scan over it and take nothing away from it. If anything, if you’re bored or dis-interested, good then click back on your browser haha.

*If you’re always on the go, I’m a huge advocate for Instapaper. Basically you can bookmark links to read on your mobile device later and it can strip away all the unnecessary imagery to load more quickly.
**If you encounter a login page for a NY Times article (yes there are quite a few of them…), I highly suggest signing up for a free account or else use this dummy one I set up.

Are Trackpads Making Our Hands Mutate
Mutate is probably the wrong word in this instance, but I don’t doubt it. We’ve adapted new aspects to our lives which undoubtedly place more motor focus on certain limbs.
Social Media Entrepreneurship: A Case Study
Article sums about a talk given by Rashmi Sinha of a company called Slideshare and how to develop an Internet start-up. She outlines her rise to prominence based on a few different lessons learned. Some are obvious and some you probably could figure out eventually but they are spelled out in the clear.
Healthcare and Afghanistan: 2 Problems, 1 Solution
A similar relationship between preventative measures in both healthcare and Afghanistan and how they share a common solution. Investing in something not immediately visible is often a tough sell but it definitely pays off down the road.
In Industrial Thailand, Health and Business Concerns Collide
Noble work at the end of a Thai lawyer, but his ignorance may be his undoing after reading this quote “I don’t care about investors,” he said. “I don’t care about losing employment and the economy. I just care that people’s lives will be protected.” So basically, you just want to bring justice, regardless of the fact that everything works in unison with one another. The economy is a huge part of society and you can’t just take this extreme one-sided stance. You’ll eventually shift focus from cleaning up the environment to whatever ailments are brought on by a jobless society. But the overall shit that is most appalling is that think of all the developing countries that may be even worse off than Thailand without anybody crusading for a better life.
Studying Young Minds, and How to Teach Them
I haven’t even fathomed entering into a meaningful relationship let alone pooping out kids, but articles like these interest me as I aim to build an all-powerful Little Eugene with massive amounts of intelligence.
In a Distressed Year, Hollywood Smiles
I think 3D will see a bigger push throughout the next few years, it’s a place where pirates currently can’t go and if movies are created more so for 3D in mind, it’ll be a boost to the industry. I can see how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a massive success and personally I’d spend more on games than a movie… but my XBOX 360 is busted and no it’s not the RROD WTF?
As Phones Do More, They Become Targets of Hacking
You saw this one coming… but it won’t ramp up until (as they mention at the bottom of the article), you start storing critical banking/financial info on your phone.
New Programs Aim to Lure Young Into Digital Jobs
While I’m not actively within this movement being far removed from school, I can’t help but be interested. This new generation of computer kids will bring a much different dynamic and level of thought processing the current workforce just doesn’t possess. You can’t blame them, the constant subjection to computers/media for kids these days is so institutionalized you can almost call it organic, it’s simply a part of their life. I still won’t call myself a blogger, that shit is wack and lame haha but if you can change things up where it’s cool, I’ll be first to wear a “Fuck Me I’m A Blogger” t-shirt.
The Last Word in Trash Talking
Seems like American football articles are holding down a consistent spot in the Link Dumps. I personally appreciate the game of trash talking, I have been partaking in a bit of it as of late. I won’t cheat and dive, but I will make fun of you if you’re fat and have cheese-tits. Just as much as there’s a technical and physical aspect to sports, you shouldn’t overlook the psychological aspect and the advantage you can derive from it.
Beyond Realtime Search: The Dawning Of Ambient Streams
Read this and be early on the future… that is if things come true. According to Edo Segal states that in the future, information that you want to know will be broadcast to you rather than you searching it. This will combine four things Realtime Web (your Twitters and news), Published Information (Sites/blogs and Wikipedias), Geolocation Data (where you are in the world also relative to your friends) and Social Communications (all forms of communication). These four elements will be filtered based on your past trends/behaviors and be delivered as your “Ambient Stream”. So now the tough part, the filtering, but I guess they’re already up on this aspect.
A Symbiotic Friendship of Mechanical Precision
The technical innovations of luxury and high-end watchmakers are seeing their advances applied over non-traditional mediums. I love seeing cross-platform innovation take place, basically learning and becoming an export in one field and then finding a way to apply it somewhere else.
Why Every Girl Wants To Be a Fashion Stylist
Once an easily looked over profession, the role of stylist has picked up more than ever. Although I can’t really pin-point why the rise in popularity? I wasn’t all that convinced by the argument that fashion has become less elitist (it’s true, it’s more open) but I don’t necessarily see the correlation.
The World Is Flat for Twitter As In Global Growth Has Stalled
No surprises here… I really appreciate Twitter but it’s sort of worn out its welcome in some ways. 140 characters leads to a certain regression in communication. I hate having to take out vowels just to fit within the cap as well, the fact that the traffic of a few (aka those intensive in followers) are sort of buoying the whole service can’t bode well. I can’t see it being all that sustainable. It has its cons and as it points out, Twitter has expanded into other languages. In Chinese/Japanese I know that 140 characters is ample space to get more across not sure about other languages.
The Rumors Are True: We Spend More And More Time Online
This isn’t good for the majority of the population. The Internet as I see it will quickly evolve into a detrimental tool if it’s used without the proper guidance. I’ve seen people compare consumption of information as no different than consumption of food, there exists good and healthy sources versus the ample amounts of bullshit and crap out there. Since the Internet is largely left un-taught in its ways of consumption, people just like those who got obese off fast food have the chance to literally get dumb off the Internet. I’ve always looked at the Internet as an awesome tool for learning and advancement IF you knew how to correctly harness it. Do I think it’s a bad idea to start teaching about this shit in school… not at all. Get them early before half the population spends their day searching “cute kitten” and “FAIL” in Youtube.
Using Menu Psychology to Entice Dinners
Depending on your reasoning for going out to eat, does price really come into play? Are you that easily tricked by simple manipulations in nomenclature and pricing haha? Not sure, I always went out to eat and USUALLY picked somewhere that I could afford and not really had to worry about prices. Something within my means. But of course, eating out is more of a special event cause I try to eat at home as often as possible. If you’re eating out extremely consistently, I can see how you could be more weary of how you spend your money.
A Unique Spirit, and So Is Her Absinthe
I’m not jumping on the bandwagon to try Absinthe but this is a cool grassroots story to see how the whole process has developed for this lady.
Strapped to Android, HTC Takes a Dizzying Ride to the Top
HTC as a phone maker I think has all the right things in place to really crush its competitors. Unlike RIM/Apple (I won’t really count Nokia cause despite a good product in the E7x series, they’re non-existent in the smart phone market), HTC has the ability to create phones for others, itself and has Google as its sidekick. C’mon Google as its sidekick, they are by far the top 1 or 2 most innovative companies out there with a strong legion of followers, me included. Couple this with Asian efficiency with a Western mentality, this hybrid way of thinking and doing business brings together the best of both worlds.
The Gang That Can’t Kick Straight
I guess NFL kickers are shitting the bed this year with no conclusive evidence as to why.
The Science of Managing Search Ads
Google Ads are one huge fucking business!!!
The Trials of the Hardest-Working Man in Hip-Hop
Lil’ Wayne… where you at? Article talks about how many of the things that made Lil’ Wayne so big over the years like mixtapes have been sorely missed in 2009 but perhaps he’s leaving the spotlight for his upcoming cast of players including Toronto’s finest Drake.
No Perk Too Small for Top Fliers
The ever-changing world of the airline industry… how are people going to pull in this mega fliers… by creating the 125,000 mile club of course.
Over the Glass and Into Hockey Lore
I guess this is the Ron Artest x Indiana Pacers fiasco of the 1970s when Mike Milbury jumped into the stands and “whacked” Rangers’ fan John Kaptain with a shoe after Kaptain hit a fellow player and stole a stick.
Politcal Football
Despite being a decent footballing nation, Iraq’s political interference has inevitably boiled over on various occasions. Indian artist Riyas Komu looks to capture various elements of Iraq’s football culture from the sadistic practices of Uday Hussein (son of Saddam) to photographs of Iraqi fans.
