Ok this wasn’t planned… I had originally set my sights on the fancy SOG Access Card 2.0 in all of its pure black glory, but apparently that glorified box cutter is pretty hard to get your hands on with lots of places sold out. I’ve always had this thing for cheap and easily consumed but ultimately well-designed things. Whether it be pens, flashlights or in this instance, pocket knives, I take comfort in knowing you got something pretty good on a budget. I feel that balling on a budget SHOULD incite you to do more research on your purchases. I took a stroll to Sham Shui Po (arguably one of the seedier places in Hong Kong) on Sunday and hit up Ap Lei Street, a haven for cheap electronics and various photographic-related stuff. I walked into a hardware store and spotted a series of Gerbers. Of course the main point of my trip was to get some cheap ass headphones that would break in 2.9 months and maybe, just MAYBE see if they had any SOG stockists which I doubted. Anyways, I saw some small, pocket Gerbers and started doing some instant-research on my phone. Thanks to Amazon, turns out most people actually rather enjoyed the styles I was eying up and the price was definitely right. Ok I’ll be honest, the “tactical” finish in black is largely useless since it’s for reduced visibility something I don’t need, however it does also serve as an anti-corrision property… I’ll push the latter as the selling point even though I was definitely sold on the black finish haha. So after spending about $50 USD, I came away with a Gerber Ridge with Serrated Edge (all black) and a Gerber Trendy (wood highlights). Cool little feature but widely available on most knives of this size were money clips. Both knives work the same way essentially, they are only covered by the one side and basically you can slide out the blade with your thumb. A metal part clicks when you extend it all the way and you just push it down to retract it. Don’t get it twisted, this knife isn’t for self-defense, nor do I ever imagine myself using this for anything other than opening boxes, splicing magazines and MAYBE opening packages of food at 7-11. If anything I’ll probably get stabbed before ever thinking about whipping these small ass blades out. Oh well, there goes my street cred… ha.
I’m going to be cutting boxes and magazines with a vengeance!!!
