Link Dump – 01.31.2010

Hypebeast TV has been the bane of my existence this past week. While it’s true I don’t specifically handle the production and filming, the organization has been pretty time-consuming. While things may inevitably smooth out down the line, I’m not so sure. Result = some more shit on my already full plate ugh. I felt this particular LD was perhaps full of the most “fun” and easiest to consume of all the articles I’ve come across, good for some weekend reading. Oh yeh Fobby Hundreds and I decided that Season is the official industry whore of our industry despite the fact she’s slept with nobody in the industry and not really in the industry any more haha.

Feel free to comment below and reference the link #.

*If you’re always on the go, I’m a huge advocate for Instapaper. Basically you can bookmark links to read on your mobile device later and it can strip away all the unnecessary imagery to load more quickly.
**If you encounter a login page for a NY Times article (yes there are quite a few of them…), I highly suggest signing up for a free account or else use this dummy one I set up.

#1. Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself
I follow Ben Balla’s (a well-known Hip-Hop jewelry) blog religiously. I find the dude fascinating… while I do feel some of the shit he posts seems “little man complex” such as tagging pictures of all the bottles he popped etc… I definitely respect the dude a ton. He takes care of the people he cares. But anyways, the post talks about his car history which is pretty interesting and a reflection of his tastes etc.

#2. Things Aren’t So Simple Anymore for Shaun White
For Shaun White, he’s huge and he’s a phenomenal athlete… but he seems to come across as “anti-snowboarding”.

#3. In Japan, U.S. Losing Diplomatic Ground to China
Uh oh… China’s gaining friend points. From an economic standpoint I’m not sure the ramifications but from a military standpoint, the Japanese don’t want the US around.

#4. Figure Skaters of Asian Descent Have Risen to Prominence
Once again *yawwwwwn… Asians good at sports nobody really cares about. When Asians dominate sports people care about on a global scale such as basketball, American football, football, F1 Racing even… I’ll pay attention.

#5. Web Is Bringing Skater’ Lives Uneasily Close to Fans’ Obsessions
Yeh agreeeeed… that shit is a scary situation when athletes are revealing their location and shit via Twitter and getting stalked… Nancy Kerrigan 2010!!!

#6. Four Ways to Jack Up Insulin Sensitivity
Insulin, a big but most likely mis-understood reason about why people get FAT. As well this comes into play when you want to put on muscle without getting overly rotund.

#7. Big Food
Food industries are becoming MEGA businesses… takeovers and mergers are the name of the game with Cadbury and Kraft being a recent huge one. Unfortunately this isn’t a good call for us the consumer down the road… well actually I don’t think I care all that much cause I don’t really consume too many of those big corporation products on the basis that it’s mostly processed shit.

#8. Sprinting Towards Single Digit Body Fat
Good article that talks about the benefits of sprinting… get out of the gym if you’re simply lifting weights. Even lifting-based HIIT doesn’t hold a candle to sprinting in terms of getting your lungs going.

#9. Virginity Protected for $38 at China Border
Fake the funk and buy a hymen at the Vietnamese/China border haha.

#10. How to use a semicolon
Yeh I needed to know too ok… cool cartoon.

#11. Demi Moore Before and After Photoshop
Check the before/after of Demi Moore haha. But no worries I ain’t hating… if my wife looks like that at 40-something, I won’t be mad.

#12. Dealing With the Financial Burden of Autism
Autism takes its financial toll and for some families… not all is covered under medicare.

#13. Rooney’s Jackpot Keeps Game’s Woes at Bay
Man Poo is facing huge debts and well talks of Rooney leaving but apparently there are more shitty things on the horizon… all these clubs on the largest stage are racking up huge debts… S-U-S-T-A-I-N-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y?

#14. Web Filters Cause Name Change for a Magazine
Haha, I’ve never heard of this Canadian magazine called Beaver… but for obvious reasons they’re changing it cause nobody can find it on the web ahah.

#15. Russia, Where the Stray Dogs Ride the Subway
Smart-ass stray Russian dogs… picking on old ladies for hand-outs.

#16. Woman Collides With a Picasso / Questions Over Fixing Torn Picasso
For real? Lady can’t walk properly and runs into a painting… now they’re thinking of how to fix that shit.

#17. São Paulo Fashion Week Organizers Raise Concern Over Too-Thin Models
Man, the picture says it all… the stigma of skinny models is true. Shit is fucking gross.

#18 Dear Mark: Polyunsaturated Fats
With everybody being wrongfully afraid of “saturated fats”… some fancy word like polyunsaturated fats comes around and it sounds good right? Find out the good and bad about it. Good = omega-3s, Bad = oxidation

#19 Iranian Breakdance Party Circa 1991
The title says it all, I ain’t a connoisseur but I think they’re pretty good no?

#20 Twitter Could Become a Recruiters Best Friend
The non-personal way to hit-up a huge demographic without worrying about the uncomfortable aspect of not answering a reply.

#21 A is for Amazon, B is for Best Buy
When will H bring up HYPEBEAST in Google’s search bar?

#22 If Apple Releases It Will Developers Come?
Of course people will flock to the iPad to design new apps. It’s not so bad that it’s entirely useless… but after all when it does hit v2 and onwards, it will pick up steam quickly. Yes I’m hating on the v1 release.

#23 10 Hong Kong Landmarks of the Past
10 weird places about Hong Kong you never knew about and sadly don’t exist any more.

#24 With Apple Tablet, Print Media Hope for a Payday
As mentioned in #22, iPad isn’t a total bust, but I’m sure print media is getting REAAAAAAAAL excited. Afterall, Apple is the one pushing the frontier and arguing for print, who else could you want in your corner?

#25 Play, Then Eat: Shift May Bring Gains at School
“One child told school workers that he was happy he didn’t throw up anymore at recess.”

Hahaha… sounds like a plan to me. Start having recesses before lunch-time… the result is less wasted food and less puke by the swings.

#26 8 Ways to Stay Present & Focused in a Tech-Driven World
Part of the reason I’ve never been down with Blackberry is that I don’t need that constant update shit. The disconnection over the long-run and un-plugging makes for a more efficient approach. You can’t be focused 100% of the time so pick your times of focus wisely. So when I’m in front of the computer or working, yeh I’ll make sure to get my shit down and then literally re-charge before repeating the next time I sit down.

#27 Cats and Dogs to be taken off menu in China
Whaaaaat? That’s bullshit! And on top of that they’re dolling out fines for eating Rover and Buttons.

#28 The Shoes, They Are A’ Changin’
Interesting indeed… seeing the progression from technical (both performance and aesthetics) footwear to more simple vulcanized offerings… and presented in a way I love… charts and numbers!

#29 Two-Year Hiatus for El Bulli in Spain
The world’s best restaurant decides to take a 2 year break to refine their craft. I’m sure they make mad money off cookbooks but still, that’s pretty impressive given they’re pretty much booked up year-round.

#30 Do Happy, Forget Yourself
I’m personally guilty of engaging in a conversation and actively thinking what’s the next thing I’m going to say. In some ways it’s disrespectful cause you aren’t paying full attention to the words of others. Definitely something I’d want to change.

#31 The Chess Master and the Computer
The only famous player I know aside from Bobby Fischer, Gary Kasparov talks about the trend involving computers and chess. While sheer computational power is good, at the end of the day, a player that can remove certain mental inadequacies (such as remembering previous game scenarios) should still have the upper hand.

#32 Historical Development: Could a Frozen Camera Dethrone Hillary and Norgay as the First to Summit Everest
Did somebody climb Mount Everest 30 years earlier than Hilary and Norgay? That would be dope if they could find the borrowed camera of Andrew Irvine with the film intact… I don’t really care if he made it to the top or not but the images would be surreal.

#33 When Chocolate and Chakras Collide
Ok this aspect of Buddhism/yoga (I don’t do yoga) will always be in conflict with me when it comes to food. I ain’t going on some bullshit anti-evolutionary vegan diet cause of some of the beliefs… but on a less serious note, yoga’s gotten to the point of trendy where people get all hot and sweaty… and then eat food on gross, sweaty mats?
