Link Dump – 05.29.2010

Taken from #18. The Big Picture: Oil Reaches Louisiana Shores

Ironically Wednesday I had a dedicated session in my pair of Nike Free 5.0s with the 4.5 insole. Nothing too crazy, did some interval training over 100 m sprints at a track and walked the curves. My feet are still sore almost 3 days later but the conscious mid-foot strikes even when just jogging are cool as you try to watch your body at work. The whole notion of barefoot running or something along those lines is getting more and more popular and ultimately something I find rather interesting. I ain’t EVER going the Vibram 5 Fingers route… ok never say never but for the time being, I’m interested in the whole movement that is quickly gaining momentum before our eyes.

China Corner

#1. Chinese Economy Treads Risky Path. (Ask Japan.)
China’s phenomenal growth isn’t one without similarities to Japan’s rise and now current fall, but where are China’s differences in policy and how will the Japanese outcome be avoided?

#2. Foreign Companies Chafe at China’s Restrictions
Let’s face it, China has always played hardball with their protectionist policies. The rest of the world salivate at the prospects of selling to the Chinese, but as I’ve said before, it’s not only cultural but also governmental barriers these foreign entities have to overcome.

#3. 40 Questions I Ask Myself Before Hitting the Shutter Release
I think the most notable is #40, “Did I just miss a great shot… (going through this ridiculous checklist)”. I guess they are all valid questions bu as you get well adapted to shooting these are seamlessly processed and decided upon without much thinking.

#4. Luminous Landscape: Sony NEX-5 First Impressions
Been very interested in this camera since it’s announcing… but it looks as though the newbie menus are enough to turn me off.

#5. ***Victorian History: The Manly Art of Self Defence
Shit, I feel like a pussy after reading about people going much past the 12th round in bare knuckle boxing matches.

#6. ***A Simple Kind of Man
Anton Krupicka runs ridiculous distances in the most minimalist of ways. This includes a lack of food in his belly at times, no iPod and minimalist shoes but it all pays off cause he’s winning races. Even if you don’t care about ultra marathoners and the like, it’s fascinating to see his personality through the interview which I felt definitely portrayed this rogue runner.

#7. ***The Brain Why Athletes Are Geniuses
Athletes have the ability to make split-second decisions at a subconscious level which you may believe to be innate talent but it’s definitely something trainable.

#8. ***Omega-3: Fishy claims for fish oil
Once the wonder supplement seems to slow its role with new studies claiming over-reaching claims for Omega-3 from fish oils. Whatever, I’ll keep popping them.

#9. The Link Between Frugality and Health
Poor(er) Americans are healthier. Makes sense, more walking, more eating at home and less money to spend on unnecessary and over-priced snack foods.

#10.*** Crooked Tongues: Vans OTW Interview with Tom Cooke
Great interview by Gary Warnett (aka GWARIZM see below) about Vans’ new OTW line and how it fits in with the rest of Vans’ current line-up.

#11. SSS – GWARIZM: Proclub Heavy Weight
Gary’s quest to find the perfect blank t-shirt… the particular topic doesn’t interest me THAT much since UNIQLO $5 tees are more than adequate for me. But Gary’s enthusiasm is awesome haha.

#12. ***Anrdoid 2.2 “Froyo” Review: It’s Sweet
Can’t wait for this shit, Android is killing it.

#13. Daily Ginger Consumption Eases Muscle Pain by 25 Percent, Study Suggests
I’m sure if you eat raw ginger, the spiciness will make you forget about any current pains.

#14. ***SSS – Has the iPhone Lost Its Cool
iPhone vs. Android, once again open will win in my eyes. The article uses a valid but slightly outdated comparison between Apple vs. Microsoft in the OS battle, we all know who won that one. But I see Google being smarter than Microsoft. Android’s ability to have people pick and choose from so many more options is extremely enticing in my eyes.

#15. Intrapreneurship: Turning Entrepreneurship Inside-Out
Forcing social change with the help of an established company rather than doing it all by yourself is the basis for intrapreneurship as it becomes an increasingly attractive option for developing countries like India who value the branding of being associated with a large company.

#16. Barefoot and Passionate
Despite the fact that running in a more minimalist or barefoot style is better for performance and health, not that many especially professional runners are willing to adopt the increasingly popular movement.

#17. Pictures: How to: Load Film
If you think it’s cool or “keeping it real” by shooting in film, your how to guide on loading the sucker.

#18. Pictures: The Big Picture: Oil Reaches Louisiana Shores
Most hated company of 2010 award goes to… you guessed it, BP.

#19. Dopamine System in Highly Creative People Similar to That Seen in Schizophrenics, Study Finds
It all makes sense now doesn’t. The ability to see relationships where they seemingly do not exist, a shared trait amongst schizos and creatives.

#20. ******Liberals in Limbo
Liberalism seems to be hitting a rough patch with the current socio-economic landscape. But fear not, good ideas will return and be implemented as they always do.

#22. Tehching Hsieh
When I interviewed Sidney Lo for a Hypebeast feature, he mentioned Teching Hsieh as his inspiration. Being the ignoranus that I am, I didn’t know who he was. Luckily Sidney drops some knowledge into the Taiwanese artist best known for his portrait photography.
