Link Dump – 07.01.2010

link-dump-07-01-2010
Taken from #25 The Big Picture: G20 Protests in Toronto

Finally cleaned out my Instapaper down to a lowly 4 articles. But at the end of it, I didn’t exactly have a ton of things worth mentioning, definitely a lot of small and relatively uninteresting articles that the general population would probably find ridiculously nerdy (like how Australians have engineered the perfect tiger prawn ha). But on the topic of larger yield from commercial shrimp, feeding the increasing number of mouths with growing appetite for protein is going to be a huge problem. I’ve started reading more on the nook, it gives you an awesome reason to read and surely makes it difficult to put down.

*If you’re always on the go, I’m a huge advocate for Instapaper. Basically you can bookmark links to read on your mobile device later and it can strip away all the unnecessary imagery to load more quickly.
**If you encounter a login page for a NY Times article (yes there are quite a few of them…), I highly suggest signing up for a free account or else use this dummy one I set up.

China Corner

#1. A Night at the Electronics Factory
Will this make you appreciate your Foxconn produced electronic device a bit more? I hope so!

#2. ***The Magical Season of the Macon Ironmen
Long read about how a small town high school baseball team defied all the odds in 1971 and went all the way to the state finals. No Cinderella story here but CLOSE!

#3. SSS – Is King Tut’s Penis Missing?
Wait, he had a small wang so they removed it???

#4. ***Tuna’s End / Genetically Altered Salmon Closer to the Dinner Table
In the ever increasing topic of food supply, one discusses how our insatiable appetite for tuna is being handled (leading Japanese restaurant Nobu has some weak justification for keeping otoro on their menu) while the other one is looking for methods of trying to introduce genetically altered salmon. The population is generally more receptive to GMO products of plant nature, so we’ll see how it goes.

#5. SSS – Does national IQ depend on parasites…
Weird hypothesis that those who don’t need to fight off disease and parasites in childhood can spend more energy on developing IQ.

#6. A revolutionary sneaker or an overhyped gimmick?
Those retarded toning shoes… looks like it they are drawing criticism NOT just cause they look heinous but also potential health problems.

#7. Relax Magazine May 2002: Acronym
Still one of the most innovative and pioneering brands in the realm of technical outerwear…here’s a throwback to 8 years ago.

#8. ***The Bright Side of Wrong
All too often, mistakes are rarely seen for their positive benefits. But in reality as human beings, our ability to work off our mistakes are virtually unparalleled. Our intelligence enables us to have the ability to adapt on the fly based on our experiences. So next time you mess-up, don’t think about the error itself, consider your next move and how it will affect the future.

#9. Is Manufacturing Coming Back to the United States
No lie that based on the recent uprisings in China, manufacturing and production costs are on the rise in China. In doing so, old opportunities can now be re-visited. I’ve seen it first hand in a lot of artisan brands in the fashion industry and this movement is mounting.

#10. ***Developers Betting On Android for Long-Term Success, Survey Suggests
I’m not an Android fan boy but I see so much more potential with Android than Apple and I think others feel the same way. The issue of fragmentation in Android is a lesser of two evils relative to Apple’s closed approach.

#11. How to Train a World Cup Ref
How do botched calls factor into ref fitness? Would they have been able to make the right call if they had been able to acquire a better position as opposed to arriving late to the play?

#12. VICE Magazine: A to Z of Sexual History – W: Wet Dream
Never had one, I feel left out.

#13. Ink Gushes in Japan’s Media Landscape
Online media just has trouble in Japan, not even grassroots movement can build themselves… some of it stems from traditional beliefs of staying with cushy corporate jobs.

#14. How to Transition to Running in Vibram Five Fingers
More so a general guide to minimalist running.

#15. SSS – Video: How to Win Monopoly in 21 Seconds

#16. ***Top 6 Ways To Increase Sprint Speed
HIP STRENGTH!!!

#17. The Mysteries of Tobias Wong
Designer, provocateur, artist, Tobias Wong had a mentality of needing to work harder than others based on his visible minority background but aside from that, he seemed to battle unknown inner demons and some serious sleep conditions.

#18. When Is A Free Meal Part of a Writer’s Job? | Now in Blogs, Product Placement
I wonder if this applies to me seeing as I don’t fall under US jurisdiction, but even then, I don’t really like writing about stuff I get for free. But as blogs gain prominence, this issue will get larger and larger. Blogs were once heralded as true and honest voices, but it’s beginning to get tainted.

#19. ***US Identifies Vast Mineral Deposits in Afghanistan
I smell trouble looming on the horizon. A true battle of US vs. China to secure these deposits and Afghanistan is far from able to create and properly run a massive multi-billion dollar mineral operation since they have no mining background.

#20. Video: Haiti Aftermath Video Montage
I’m super late to this video, it’s been sitting in my Instapaper forever and I definitely wish I had watched it earlier.

#21. ***SSS – Leaked Docs Shows Apple Knows About Reception Problem
Apple fanboys, please defend this one. Your favorite brand knowingly tried to screw you and force an inferior product down your throat.

#22. VICE Magazine: An Interview With My Postman
This is quite the partying postman.

#24. The Cut: The Twenty Most Ridiculous Looks from Men’s 2011 Spring Collection

#25. Pictures: VICE Magazine: G20 Protest Pics | The Big Picture: G20 Protests in Toronto
Looks like a good job of over-sensationalization from the media.
