First Link Dump of 2011 and it’s a fat one. Is this the year when all eyes turn to China beyond just its economical impact and we begin to see a more widespread look into its societal landscape? Schooling has been a hotly contested topic since it was announced just a few weeks ago and I don’t think it will be the end of it.

#4. Shanghai Schools’ Approach Pushes Students to Top of Tests | ***China’s Winning Schools
Despite the fact that these Shanghainese factories pump out highly competent students in technical subjects, there still remains issues in creativity and problem solving. Going between the US and China, I think both sides see benefit in the other’s educational system.

#8. ***Let’s Compete on Innovation Not Patents
Chinese companies are being enticed with funding and accolades for pumping out patents, but it looks as though this will simply encourage false and shitty patents which really won’t help China all that much. The author encourages innovation and problem solving rather than frivolous patent application.
#9. Why Asian Restaurants Want Fewer Customers
Recognizing that quality comes at a price, Asian restaurants are now scaling back their customers. While this isn’t a surprise amongst Japanese restaurateurs, it does seem a bit of a rare trait amongst Chinese restaurants.
#10. ***Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior | ***How My Chinese Dad Saved My Life
This article drew a ton of criticism about parenting styles as it embraced the harsh and strict parenting methods of Chinese/immigrant parents. My dad was relatively strict but aside from that him and my mom weren’t totally crazy or unreasonable in their efforts. I really respect the way my parents brought me up. As first generation parents they didn’t go the same route as my grandparents and other more traditional methods. Instead I think my brother and I really were able to develop into our own. I may not have that engineering degree and neither does my brother, but I think we’re both generally quite satisfied of where we’re at and where we’re going. Obviously my parents are happy despite the fact I didn’t go the traditional Asian route.
Read the second article as well, Eddie Huang is a restaurant owner and NY with an impressive background… as well as previous owner of a not so good streetwear label but he tells a really good story.
#11. In China, Car Buyers in a Backup
China is severely curtailing the number of licenses it hands out to would be drivers. Makes sense, the pollution is a big factor and the infrastructure simply can’t handle it.

I’ve been looking more and more into this when I realized that insulin wasn’t just secreted in great amounts alongside carbohydrate consumption. Probably not something of interest for too many, but since inflammation is at the root of many disease, it may have incorrectly linked with insulin. According to these articles about a bad rep, they seem to question insulin’s role in fat gain.
