(In a sea of people, what’s different amongst us all… god I’m so philosophical)
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year… the Internet doesn’t quit. Can’t stop won’t stop so they say. It’s this aspect of working in online media that revolves around trends that is perhaps the most disheartening. You can go to sleep with a zero inbox and within hours let alone one sleep cycle later, expect to have your inbox filled. This particular relationship makes for a precarious one, you’re never on your own agenda but that of somelebody else and the info that needs to be posted.
While time and being instantaneousness are the very assets of online media versus its traditional print adversary, I see all too often blogs that come into the landscape trying to emulate the next Hypebeast. As I mentioned, the Internet is a 24 hour phenomenon, how a start-up blogger expects to compete with hired guns (aka people like me that are so-called “professional bloggers”) is beyond me. You can’t work 24 hours a day and cover multiple time zones much like an established news site can do. Having said that, exclusive content is obviously a very powerful tool in developing and establishing a blog. However, not every blogger has access to product drops, a large amount of resources and big-name interviews.
But at the very root of every single person is one bit of exclusive in-house content and that is your opinions and your insights. Nobody will have the same opinion or insight as you, and even if there are similarities, your articulation and presentation are still very much your own. Everybody has access to the same materials, but only you have access to your own thoughts. Why not leverage this to your advantage?
My biggest gripe about this job is the fact that it knows no end. The job depends very much on others and for it, you lack a certain freedom since you aren’t the one necessarily dictating the pace. With this blog itself, whether I posted this now or I posted it 3 weeks later, it would still hold a similar relevancy.
