OS X vs. Windows 7… A few weeks later

It’s usually assumed that most people that work in a “creative field” is saddled with an Apple computer. I tried to buck the trend as long as I could and was successful for the most part. My disdain for Apple always came from what I perceived as an overly curated experience. Apple seems to offer a relatively narrow path to walk. That’s fine if you don’t like complexity or figuring shit out. I’m not trying to claim myself as some almighty technical deity, but I just like to make things as complicated as I like or have the ability to customize to my heart’s content. PCs are far from perfect but I couldn’t help but battle my way through this whole “you’ll never go back after a Mac” mantra. I’ll never fault Apple products for their design cause their unified industrial design language is awesome, but the experience was something I was and still am skeptical. For those wondering, I was on an old PC at work but they deemed it too troublesome to upgrade the RAM hence the move to a Mac.

I think had a come from a horrid Windows operating system like Vista (I’m on Windows 7 now), perhaps there would have been more positives for OS X. Still not convinced by any means with Apple’s product and for the time being I’ll adjust which hasn’t been too tough. I always like to add productivity programs to my arsenal, but more often then not I see that Mac is often excluded which is unfortunate. Oh yeh and performance wise, a little disappointed with the Mac Mini, seems less able to handle my everyday workload which is basically opening 80 tabs at once. For my knit-pickings, it doesn’t get any easier than below.

The Spaces and Exposes are a nice touch, however same thing is possible with Windows.

The fact that clicking the program icon is sort of like tabbing between windows.

I like how the Apple button in the top left keeps track of all settings. As well having all the commands available make it easy to find ALWAYS

The font is awesome

Notifications/bounce is cool

Adding bookmarks in Chrome, so much better with the auto OK/anywhere click OK

Keyboard is awesome

No need to right click to rename

File structuring when going into folders is well laid out. At first I hated it, but once you space it out accordingly, it’s much quicker than Windows

Hot keys are a nightmare, way too many keystrokes for deleting off Desktop. When in a browser, shifting between tabs then deleting requires you to move both fingers.

Why isn’t there a true maximize button for all programs?

Hard to keep track of multiple windows open whereas Windows 7 shows mini-versions of all opened windows when you mouse over

Magic Mouse sucks for connectivity and performance

Need to right click view info for any details regarding a file

Previewing images a nightmare, why can’t you just click one as opposed to selecting all *** @jeffcarvalho mentioned I can just hit the first file and then use spacebar

Installing programs is overly complicated, why do I need to drag it?

I’m not sure what influenced what, but I’m pretty sure that the way PCs work probably created a particular approach to getting stuff done. Hence why this whole Mac experience was largely lost on me.

P.S. Any tips, I’d love to hear them!
