I got back from my yearly trip to Canada a little over 2 weeks ago. Every time I go home, people ask, “so do you like it in Hong Kong?” To be frank, mostly no. I’m starting to hate Hong Kong and it gets compounded in the summer when it’s so god damn hot and humid. The very materialistic culture that effectively opened my eyes does indeed make it a difficult place to live when it almost becomes the reason for one’s existence. Buying a home is virtually unattainable for most people due to the power held by development companies together with rampant competition namely from an influx of Mainlanders. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not afraid of competition, but working more to achieve a material possession is not how I want to be spending my time.
It’s always so refreshing to return back to good ol’ Alberta where everybody is so much more relaxed, calm and peaceful. It’s two polar opposites, you have the cut throat “fuck you” attitude in HK and then you have a generally more caring and compassionate vibe. But enough sappy stuff, I went back on this trip in particular cause one of Nicole’s best friends was getting married. Congratulations once again to Ray & Marada. Shit, getting to an age where everybody around you is getting married on most of your vacation days are set to be dedicated to weddings. Oh well, it was super fun. I played the role of the pro bono wedding photographer with limited gear and it was pretty fun. I used to hate shooting people because I felt that the importance of the photo often was meaningless outside the people involved, but then I realized how much fun people enjoy having their photo taken… and it’s this pleasure that makes it all worth it.
I have another set from a trip to Waterton National Park I’ll post in a few days.
