So I figured it was time to grab some new pens. Pretty fucking random you figure eh. It never really dawned on me but I think I’m starting to really appreciate a good pen, or maybe I’m just a consumeristic whore and like buying shit? I went next level geek and actually Google’d “Best pens for under $10″. I didn’t need a pen that I had spent a lot of money on and was probably going to lose anyways so I figured I just wanted some shits that would get the job done and do it well for cheap. But looking back, I guess always had this thing with good pens. You can instantly tell the difference between a shitty one and a good one and maybe it’s that obvious jump in performance that makes you really strive for a solid writing utensil. Despite my dad spending 30 years in Canada and still an accent thick as the London fog, his job as an engineer meant he usually had some pretty solid pen selections… same with some of the kids at school rocking those tiny-ass micro-tip ink pens with the “visible ink window”. In elementary and junior high, I would cherish the day I would either find or jack one of those relatively expensive pens cause I was using shitty see-through Bic pens (often cap-less cause I lost them all) nestled in my grubby ass pencil case. However those clear Bic pens were cool when you lit them down the middle with a lighter and twisted them to create a cool spiral design as they cooled down and molded.
However back to the main point… As of late, I’ve found myself becoming re-accustomed to writing, doodling, drawing, sketching… whatever. I am terrible at all of the above, but there just seems to be a more personal relationship with your work as you see it play out before your eyes and not just typing or using a computer for that shit. The ability to work in your own context and format, not worrying about spending 5 minutes fucking with your word document to make it look a certain way makes pen x paper just so much more convenient when you’re on the go or just need to put thoughts to paper as quickly as possible.
Back to the pens, I settled on…
- Pilot G-2 (black & blue)
- Staedler triplus fineliner (black, blue, red & orange) – these shits are fucking good!!!
- Zebra F301
I’ll probably lose them within a month and have to go buy some more ha.
