Breakfast of Champions Errday

breakfast-of-champions-1

Ok this post is out of left field for sure. Who else has pretty much the same breakfast everyday and an unconventional one at that. Behold my self-made coconut concoction. There’s a fuck load of coconut in there I can tell you that much. I usually pound one of these at ~10 am and it tides me over till 7:30 pm or so. It’s pretty heavy but incredibly delicious. I don’t understand why we’d go against what our body tells us. If we don’t have hunger pangs, guess what? You’re not fucking hungry so don’t eat… for the regular person, there’s no need to “eat every 3 hours to keep your metabolism levels boosted”. Look into Intermittent Fasting for more details. Basically going 1/3rd or 1/2 a day without eating won’t kill you and it has health benefits to boot.

Also, forget that the government-instituted grain dependent shit they tell you which involves low fat diets. Although I would watch Omega-6 fatty acids in relation to Omega-3 fatty acids, the notion of evil saturated fat NOT causing shit like heart disease is quickly gaining traction. Probably cause so many people realized they were following prototypical diets and felt themselves getting nowhere, sick, overweight etc. People always think that Asian people are skinny and that their carb-heavy diets promote a healthy lifestyle… but all these cats are the epitome of skinny fat. Skinny frames but with guts hanging out underneath their shirts.

Enough preaching but a few years ago I started thinking there has to be a way to be healthy in Hong Kong. Little did I know that much of traditional whole grain, low fat approach to a diet (which is pretty tough to do in Hong Kong) is actually not all that healthy. Will I spiel off on this why? No… I’ll leave it to people that know more about this than me, FreeTheAnimal.com and MarksDailyApple. Free The Animal is more scientific and more abrasive but Mark’s Daily Apple is probably an easier, more professional approach to a Paleo Diet. Both promote the “paleo” lifestyle which is eating more like the way our genes have been programmed for the last tens of thousands of years. So onto to the Breakfast of Champions… I’ll try to offer the health benefits as I go through the list:

Coconut Milk – anti-fungal/bacterial/viral, Medium Chain Triglycerides = easy to use energy, high in “saturated fats” but it doesn’t really mean shit. Sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
Coconut Cream – I don’t really need to have this in there but I add it anyways (read above for benefits)
Desiccated Coconut – It thickens everything up. I guess I could use ice cubes too and a blender but that’s too much work. (read two above for benefits)
Flax Seed – I grind these in a coffee grinder… get my omega 3 fatty acids alongside fish oil. There’s a proliferation of a un-balanced omega 3 / omega 6 ratios in our diets. It should be around 1.0 – 1.5 / O3 – O6. But I heard that flax seed may lead to prostate cancer? Source: 1 / 2
Whey Protein – Although I add it in mostly for protein, there are some potential health benefits from whey as well pertaining to cholesterol reduction but I think there’s still debate over cholesterol and health. Sources: 1 / 2
Cinnamon – Lowers insulin sensitivity meaning when you consume carbs, less insulin is secreted. And the shit tastes fucking unreal. Sources: 1 / 2
Cocoa – Anti-oxidants… but I’m sure I could do better with some organic shit. Sources: 1 / 2 / 3
Almond milk – Just cause milk isn’t healthy for you, could go on for days.
Almonds – Taste real good, add crunch…
Natural yogurt – Another thing I’m sure I could do better with but yogurt’s pretty expensive here so I settle for the local brand. It tastes pretty shitty with a bad consistency and sometimes I question its probiotic benefits but it seems to be doing alright. With all the anti-biotics pumped into our meat source, I’m sure a lot of people could benefit from a probiotic boost.

Usually I go like so:
1. Pour 200 ml of coconut milk
2. A squirt of coconut cream
3. Add two heaping table spoons of yogurt
4. Add the cinnamon and cocoa. I usually cover the top so I don’t see white anymore haha
5. Add the ground flax (I usually grind one heaping table spoon)
6. Add two scoops of protein
7. Fill to the top with almond milk (usually in this order so the whey doesn’t stick)
8. Shake
9. Put that into a big mug filled with almonds and the dessiccated coconut.
10. Mix that shit up.
11. Add more cinnamon.
12. Usually thick enough to eat with a spoon!
