I was much bigger into cars right around the age of 16, as I started driving. Oh those were the days, ripping around in a car conceived the same year as your birth… that 1984 Chevy Blazer I drove was a beast. Not literally but we ripped shit up in that thing. Winter-time donut fests in the Canadian prairies, hopping curbs, taking it off-roading… I actually hope my dad doesn’t read this. A lot of shit went down in that thing and some things got “lost” bah ahhaha.
My affinity for cars was mostly based on the mechanical side of things and how it all worked. It was rarely about the aesthetics. Eventually any passion for cars slowly waned as I found less and less a need to drive and cause I had no money for a car. Anyways… the Buick GNX always struck me as an acquired taste. The entirely un-aerodynamic package came complete with a pretty “un-American” turbo’d V6… but I was in love. I happened to really like the boxy lines of the GN and the whole notion of its sleeper status (although it could probably be a bit more subtle?).
I was in Toys R’ Us the other days and found this slightly beat up Hot Wheels Buick GN. Although I am sure the car has no relevance to the Skyline and Fairlady loving Hong Kong contingency, surprisingly I wasn’t able to find a more pristine package. Oh well, it’s the closest I’ll probably get to owning a car let alone a Buick GN.
