Back in November, Brian Dunseth put together an interview with myself for one half of his ongoing soccer project, The Original Winger. It was by far one of the most interesting interviews to participate in, and represented a breath of fresh air that went beyond the usual musings of “streetwear” and the Internet. For the unfamiliar, Brian Dunseth has boasted a pretty impressive resume you’ll seen read about. From his time on the pitch and color commentating to his creation of two soccer-related lifestyle brands, he’s been an integral part in the growth of soccer in America.

While this interview may seem as a “thank you” of sorts due to the reciprocal nature, in many ways this interview with “Dunny” is exactly what I wanted to focus on with this platform. Not many stories are known behind individuals that have had opportunity to represent their country on the world stage (as a team captain nonetheless), play a sport professionally and be seen on a regular basis on Fox Soccer Channel. It’s exactly one’s untold story that creates the foundation for their current success that has ultimately been something that I’ve always been really interested in.

With soccer still looking to establish its future path in North America alongside so many well-established sports with strong professional establishments, I looked to Brian to offer some of his personal insights in the growth and agenda of a sport he’s undoubtedly helped in raising its profile. Already we’re seeing the MLS become more and more successful as the seasons go on. But aside from this, he recounts a story of the MLS in its infancy and the reality of being a professional athlete that is far removed from the millionaire lifestyles associated with many of America’s established leagues. It’s definitely not a short interview but I think Brian touches on a lot of interesting topics and brings some insights that can only be provided by somebody who’s been right at the frontlines in so many aspects.
