Link Dump – 01.05.2010

I’ll do you the favor of splitting this shit up. This original Link Dump was almost like 40 links haha. I feel a bit bad, some are relatively dated back to Christmas Eve etc but I made sure to not include any time-sensitive links. I’ll post another one tomorrow or something as well to bring things up to date. It’s ~3:19 am here in Hong Kong so technically it’s the 5th of January.

*If you’re always on the go, I’m a huge advocate for Instapaper. Basically you can bookmark links to read on your mobile device later and it can strip away all the unnecessary imagery to load more quickly.
**If you encounter a login page for a NY Times article (yes there are quite a few of them…), I highly suggest signing up for a free account or else use this dummy one I set up.

Koons, Hirst Prices Drop 50%; May Take Next Decade to Recover
Our generation’s richest living artists have seen their bubble burst… but it seems only temporary.

Whatever Doesn’t Kill Some Animals Can Make Them Deadly
The cliche’d statement of what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger holds true in the animal kingdom as the ability to deal with poison offers some interesting survival traits.

Taking Mental Snapshots to Plumb Our Inner Selves
This article hit the nail on the head for me. I’m always asking myself shit over and over again, questioning myself, my actions and my thoughts, not so much from a perspective of doubt, but more cause I’m always looking for a different angle of approach and thought. While quantifiable studies are a part of psychological science, the intangible aspect and the thoughts that coincide with one’s personal place and perspective are entirely different as scientists try to piece these relationships together.

Shoplifters? Studies Say Keep an Eye on Workers
Internal theft comes as no biggy as seasonal workers or young workers with quick turn-around look to overcome shitty pay and what I assume are shitty conditions.

Fasting Makes You Active
Article talks about Intermittent Fasting (aka breaking away from the usual conventional wisdom that you should continually be feeding) but I’m not so sure. It is good to a certain degree but I’ve also read things saying there are better times to practice fasting. Studies show that cultures that practice ritualistic fasting like Islamic practicers during Ramadan do experience decreased performance.

How to Start Freelancing (Without Quitting Your Job)
I need to get up on this!!!

colalife
Aside from the debate of how unhealthy and utterly useless Coca Cola is, at least their infrastructure has allowed for more beneficial initiatives that help shuttle useful meds across the diverse Coke network.

Harvard’s Hoops Star Is Asian. Why’s That a Problem?
Asians in popular Western culture, still not 100% accepted, hence why we even have this article haha.

Trial in China Signals New Limits on Dissent
It’s 2010 (well technically article was from Xmas Eve) but China’s censorship looks to tighten its grip.

The Ice Rink That Changed Boston Hockey
Boston’s rich sporting history has paved the way for some iconic places of sporting worship including this little known rink.

Conversations in Soccer – Martin Rogers of Yahoo! Sports
A talk with transplanted writer Martin Rogers who has followed the rise of “soccer” in the United States since the arrival of Beckham. Although he is careful to really lay some serious insight on what needs to be changed and what isn’t working.

The Ping-Pong Prodigy
Don’t waste your time kid, 9 hours of training a week versus a “sports factory” in China that churns out Ping-Pong hopefuls that probably are hitting balls 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. But of course, if you love the game, you love it.

After Being a Florida Icon, Tebow Becomes an N.F.L. Question Mark
Sweet Finish for Tebow and Gators
I seriously only heard about Tim Tebow in 2009… everybody loves to read a dominating story about a good guy who Tebow is exactly. Despite his awesome collegiate career, still some doubters on how effective his jump to the NFL will be.

Making a Little Fun of Russia’s Powerful
What’s wrong with a little political cartoon fun eh? Still worth mentioning I guess given Russia’s past political ideologies, I’m sure this liberal stance against political commentary wouldn’t fly in China.

TMZ Admits It Was Duped by a Photo
TMZ dealt a major blow for this fuck-up, presenting a pic of JFK with a bunch of naked birds which was later deemed fake.

Terror Attempt May Hinder Plans to Close Guantánamo
Yup, there’s a kink in the plans for the Obama administration. Those who want to keep Guantánamo around now have some nice firepower thanks to the events of December 25th.

Money Tips for When the Sniffles Start
So don’t waste your money on bull-shit remedies and cures cause they don’t work. My tips, cut out the processed shit, eat more naturally anti-fungal/anti-bacterial foods (like coconut/garlic) and get some good probiotic supplements in you.

Five Tech Themes for 2010
Self-explanatory, many were notables at the tail-end of 2009 and will carry full-steam into 2010.
